Mugshots (some generated by AI), photographs of staged weapons, and the script from the SRF Tatort episode Züri brännt served as the starting point for this layout. The script was rearranged to function like a riddle, inviting readers to piece together its fragmented narrative. The mugshots were made unrecognizable or cut into sections to support the sense of mystery. The images of the weapons have also been restaged and, together with quotes from archive footage of the «Jugendunruhen» of 1980, they form the introduction to the book.
An index at the end helps readers to navigate through the script and decode the puzzle. The cover also participates in this logic: through its coded structure, the fragmented faces can be reassembled into complete portraits.
To conclude the project, a new interpretation of the iconic Tatort intro was animated using the visual and typographic elements of the layout. The animation extends the book’s fragmented aesthetic into motion, serving as a visual echo of its cryptic and layered composition.
